I’ve written about the filming of the 2022 Robert Patterson film ‘The Batman’ before as it was partially filmed in Liverpool and Glasgow. It interestingly combined both Liverpool’s Anfield Cemetery and the Glasgow Necropolis to become Gotham City’s cemetery. The Batman – Anfield Cemetery – From scene to seen
There’s a scene at the very end of the film where Batman and Catwoman say their farewells and speed off on their motorcycles in separate directions. I’m slightly obsessed by it, purely from the perspective of the locations used.
Their conversation takes place on a set overlooking a CGI version of Gotham River at twilight. Catwoman exits on her bike, moments later Batman follows. Location sequences showing the duo then cut between Glasgow’s Necropolis and Anfield Cemetery several times. You see them ride together over the distinctive bridge in the Glasgow cemetery known as the ‘Bridge of Sighs”. Finally, they end up driving towards Anfield Cemetery gatehouse as they go to leave the cemetery. I love that that there was a very deliberate production choice to get the best shots from the two locations – which must caused so much work for the continuity team. I can’t imagine the logistics involved in filming the same scene across two locations 219 miles apart.
Watching the film I could place the shots taken in Liverpool and Glasgow, but the shot at the very end – showing them ride out of the cemetery onto a main road – I didn’t recognise. Thanks to the dedication of fellow location geeks on Instagram I discovered that it was Wishart Street which runs beneath the ‘Bridge of Sighs’ in Glasgow. This was somewhere I was finally able to check out the during my last visit to Glasgow back in July 2025.

In the screenshot below you can see the two motorcycles going over the bridge which is in Glasgow.

This is the same bridge in the glorious Glasgow sunshine (which the city is not famous for!).

Below is the same bridge but the underside of it, viewed from the bottom of Wishart Street looking towards Glasgow Royal Infirmary. There’s another ‘cheat’ – there isn’t actually a road where you see them coming out with Catwoman going left and Batman turning right. There’s continuous railings along the road either side of the bridge so they just created the illusion of them driving out of a side road. You then see Batman watching Catwoman disappear out of sight along the road in his side mirror.

My husband Andy and I matched the shot above by waiting for a gap in the traffic and standing in the middle of the road – now that’s dedication to the cause.

Curiosity now satisfied I can watch the film knowing exactly where those final scenes were shot – and that pleases me far more than it should!

Glasgow Cathedral and the Glasgow Necropolis have both been used in major productions over the years – most recently the Cathedral was used in Guillermo del Toro’s 2024 film ‘Frankenstein‘ Film and TV Locations in Glasgow | Outlander, Batman, Succession and More | Visit Glasgow If you’re in the area and want to learn more there is a Friends of Glasgow Necropolis society that offer tours Tours – Glasgow Necropolis
